Gainsborough Dolphins SC Championships – 17.07.11

HOT on the heels of the first round of in-house club championships held by Gainsborough Dolphins at the West Lindsey Leisure Centre the second round proved another success. With more entries than the first round the packed spectator gallery witnessed some excellent performances from all the swimmers. As with the previous round the programme on the evening contained all the old records set under the former constitutions as a reminder of their history meaning all winning times set on the night would become the new times to beat in the future years. Despite this it was double celebration for brothers Brandon and Aarron Smith who both recorded victories inside the now archived records of Trenton Dolphins. 7 year old Brandon swam an outstanding 25m front crawl to overhaul the previous mark set by Darren Wigglesworth nearly 30 years ago in 1982 as he recorded a time of 20.22 whilst his elder brother broke the previous best set in 2002 by Jason Allcock in the boys 13 years 100m butterfly. Lincolnshire Swimming League

THE third and final round of the 2011 Lincolnshire Swimming League saw Gainsborough Dolphins travel to the eight lane pool at the Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth. Competing against a near full strength defending champions Lincoln Vulcans ‘A’,  Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe Aquatics (CASA), Louth, South Lincs, Grantham, Lincoln Vulcans ‘B’ and the City of Lincoln Pentaqua (CLP) it pitted the best of the County against each other in a gala full of very competitive races. As expected Vulcans ‘A’ and CASA dominated the proceedings resulting in Dolphins battling with Louth for third place, a contest they unfortunately lost as the Gainsborough outfit had to settle for a very satisfying fourth place on the night and in the final league table. The strength Dolphins have in the younger ages of the Club was again apparent as the boys and girls 10 years age groups were in outstanding form. Only two victories were secured on the night and these both fell in this category as Shannon Conway won her 50m butterfly and Ben Ambrose was victorious in the 50m breaststroke. In the boys 10 years James Beresford finished second in the 50m backstroke and third in the 50m butterfly and alongside Ben Crookes and Toby Sutherland they claimed two impressive second  places in the boys 10 years freestyle and medley relay events. Grace Tooke swam superbly in the girls 50m breaststroke to achieve third place and along with Shannon, Molly Creed and Katie Bindon this quartet emulated the boys with second places in both their relays. 12 year old Loveday Beresford claimed two second places on the night in the girls 12/U 50m butterfly and freestyle with Henry Cawte and Aarron Smith also placing second in the boys 14/U 100m breaststroke and butterfly respectively. Despite a personal best time in the Mens Open 100m freestyle James Smith had to settle for third as did Robyn Dand in the Ladies Open 100m backstroke. Ewan McKay recorded Dolphins only other third place in the boys 12/U 50m breaststroke whilst an unfortunate disqualification in the 50m butterfly cost him second place. Individual fourth places were achieved by David Trickett (Mens Open 100m breaststroke), Charlotte Smith (girls 12/U 50m backstroke), Ben Crookes (boys 10yrs 50m freestyle), Molly Creed (girls 10yrs 50m freestyle) and Katie Bindon (girls 10yrs 50m backstroke). Special mention to all the other Dolphin swimmers – Bradley Janney, Georgia McKay, Amy Evans, Heather Cooke, Rebecca Codd, William Walmsley, Emily Wright, Will Cawte, Pete Trickett, Tonicha Watson, Sophie Blades, Cammron Bower, Hollie Watkins, Lydia Waring, George Tooke and Aysha Simpson whose magnificent efforts all contributed to the final standings. A huge thank you from the Club to all the parents and supporters and all the volunteers in their various capacities on the night. Final result: 1st Lincoln Vulcans ‘A’ 314 points; 2nd CASA 273; 3rd Louth 241; 4th Gainsborough Dolphins 214; 5th Grantham 197; 6th South Lincs 170; 7th CLP ‘A’ 148; 8th Lincoln Vulcans ‘B’ 135.

Retford Swimming Club Open Meet 2011 – 19/06/11

PONDS Forge International pool was the venue for the recent Retford Swimming Club 18th Annual Open Meet which saw 13 Gainsborough Dolphin swimmers compete over 25m with the pool length reduced for this competition. Despite the early start they all produced some outstanding performances during the day totalling 21 top three places and a very honourable 7th club overall from the 32 that were represented. Days from his sixteenth birthday David Trickett was in superb form as he came away with six wins from six events in the boys 15 years age group. The magic minute was broken for the first time in the 100m freestyle as he clocked 58.96 seconds whilst he also produced personal bests in the 50m breaststroke and 100m butterfly. Victories were also achieved in the 100m Individual Medley (I/M), 50m freestyle and 200m I/M. The small posse of nine and ten year old girls in attendance were in the hunt for qualification times for next years Lincolnshire Age Groups and they didn’t disappoint as they all achieved at least one time. Nine year old Shannon Conway also swam an excellent 50m butterfly to claim victory in her age group whilst she had to settle for third in the 50m backstroke. In the same age group Katie Bindon placed sixth in the 50m backstroke, eighth in the 50m freestyle and 15th in the 50m breaststroke whilst Harriet Webster just missed the top six in the 50m breaststroke and butterfly events as she finished seventh in both. Harriet achieved two life time bests in the afternoon session for the 50m backstroke (14th) and 50m freestyle (12th). Competing as a ten year old for the first time Molly Creed came up against some very good competition as she claimed sixth place in the 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke. Even with a huge personal best in the 100m I/M she could only manage seventh while she also recorded ninth in the 50m freestyle and tenth in the 50m breaststroke. Also gaining some qualification times for the Lincolnshire Age Groups was 14 year old Tonicha Watson whose hard work in training proved dividends as she placed third in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. A ten second personal best helped her to finish fourth in the 200m I/M whilst she secured a top six finish in the 50m backstroke. Completing a busy day she just missed the top six in the 100m backstroke and I/M finishing seventh in both with eighth in the 100m freestyle and ninth in the 50m freestyle. In very competitive age groups both 12 year old Aidan Clover and 11 year old Cammron Bower found it tough going as the former finished 14th in the 100m freestyle and I/M with 13th in the 50m freestyle whilst Cammron placed 11th in the 50m breaststroke, tenth in the 100m breaststroke and 12th in the 50m freestyle. The luckless Jack Boulton continued his mantle of finishing fourth in three of his four events in the morning session of the boys 13 years age group in the 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 100m I/M but he made amends later securing three second places in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. In the same age group Aarron Smith achieved success in winning the 50m butterfly and backstroke events with second in the 100m I/M and third in the 50m breaststroke. An unfortunate slip on the turn cost him further glory in the 50m freestyle as he recovered to finish fourth when a third victory was more than achievable. The boy’s ten year old group also had two representatives as Ben Crookes secured three life time bests in the 50m freestyle (11th), 50m breaststroke (15th) and 100m freestyle (14th). In the 50m backstroke he just missed his personal best to place 13th whilst illegal movement on the blocks saw him disqualified in the 100m I/M. Following a very productive morning session where William Walmsley swam personal bests to claim victory in the 200m freestyle, second in the 100m freestyle and fifth in the 100m backstroke the schedule was anything but kind to him in the afternoon. A hat-trick of fourth places were achieved as he produced a life time best in the 100m breaststroke before he had to dig deep in the last two events of the day. Following a disappointing 100m butterfly he had only ten minutes to recover before producing the gutsiest swim of his life in the 200m I/M. Looking tired and lethargic he somehow found the energy to finish very strongly as he was just touched out of third place by eight one hundredths of a second. In the Mens 16/O age group 18 year old Peter Trickett had a very successful day as he placed in the top six in all his five events. Two personal best times saw him place first and sixth in the 200m and 100m freestyle events respectively with second place in the 200m I/M, third in the 100m backstroke and fourth in the 50m backstroke. Lincolnshire Masters – East Midland Inter Counties

A HEAVILY depleted Lincolnshire squad recently travelled to the Queens Leisure Centre at Derby for the East Midlands Inter County Masters Competition. Containing four representatives selected from Gainsborough Dolphins they placed fifth against a high standard of swimmers from Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire (A and B teams) and Leicestershire.  With many of the county swimmers missing it meant a heavy work load for those in attendance forcing as many as nine races each over the hour and a half of competition.  Fresh from her honeymoon in the Caribbean was Ruth Howitt and despite having not trained for over a month put in some very good performances to finish fifth in both the 50m breaststroke and backstroke events of the Ladies 18-30 years age group. The many absentees resulted in Dolphins Masters team manager Nic Clover and club mate James Lugg being the only male representatives in the 30-39 years age group. James swam an excellent 50m freestyle finishing fifth in a very close finish whilst Nic gained a fourth in the 50m breaststroke and two fifth place finishes in his less than favourite 50m butterfly and backstroke events. Making his debut for Lincolnshire in the Masters was 18 year old Peter Trickett who produced a fine swim to place fourth in the Mens 18-30 years 50m backstroke as he was also involved in a tight finish between second and fifth places. All four contributed to many relay events alongside their fellow county teammates with them all putting in creditable displays. Further congratulations to Ruth and Peter who were presented with their Lincolnshire county colours by the President of Derbyshire ASA prior to the first race of the afternoon.   The formation of the new swimming club in the town has allowed the Masters section to have its own identity and water time away from the main competitive squads. With two categories available for competitive and fitness the sessions are organised and friendly with achievable schedules allowing for personal development at each member’s own pace. Any ex-swimmers who fancy getting back in and reliving their youth or anyone who wishes to attend to improve their fitness are more than welcome. Midland Age Group Championships – June 2011

COMPETING recently over two consecutive weekends saw 12 year old Henry Cawte represent Gainsborough Dolphins at the Midland Age Group Championships in the 50m pool at Coventry. With qualifying times for this event becoming increasingly tough the Kexby based swimmer was the only representative to enter for Dolphins against the fastest swimmers from across the Midland region. Qualifying for seven events Henry opted not to compete in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, allowing him to concentrate on achieving success in his favourite breaststroke events. In both the 100m and 200m breaststroke he qualified for the final after placing eighth and seventh respectively after the heats. The 200m saw him finish in eighth place where only tenths of a second separated him from a fifth place in a very close finish. His time was just outside his personal best as it was in the 100m where he bettered his position to finish seventh in the final out of the much detested lane 8. Henry had started his campaign in the 400m freestyle and was again just outside his life time best as he finished 14th overall after being seeded 20th. Unfortunately for Henry his 200m Individual Medley came hot on the heels of his 200m breaststroke final and despite a brave effort he was unable to produce a new personal best as he finished 20th. Luck deserted the youngster again in his final event as the dreaded lane 8 was drawn for him in the 200m freestyle. Following a very good first 100m he tired slightly to finish 30th overall out of a field of 38. Unfortunately for current Lincolnshire champion he also missed out on qualifying for the National Age Group Championships in August by tenths of seconds in both the breaststroke events.  For more information on the Club please visit www.gainsboroughdolphins.co.uk.

Doncaster Dartes Open Meet 2011

THE Adwick Leisure Centre was the venue for the recent B Grade Open Meet hosted by Doncaster Dartes where eleven Gainsborough Dolphins swimmers were in competition. Between them they placed in the top six on 13 occasions over their collective 25 events with six top three places. These types of competitions are designed to allow first time entrants and with strict entry rules to avoid the very fast swimmers from competing, allowing success for those that would not normally achieve in other Meets. Taking advantage of the opportunity two of the Dolphin members competed for the first time in the girls 9 years age group. Sian Saunders swam a superb 50m breaststroke in a very creditable time to claim sixth place whilst team mate Lily Talbot finished 10th in this event. Whilst Sian only entered one event Lily combated her nerves to produce three more outstanding performances as she placed 11th in the 50m backstroke, 15th in the 100m Individual Medley (I/M) and 17th in the 50m freestyle. Held over two sessions the morning one definitely suited 11 year old Tom Humphries who impressed with four sensational life time best swims. An accumulative of over 25 seconds was taken off his previous personal best times as he placed fourth in the 50m backstroke, sixth in the 50m freestyle, 7th in the 50m breaststroke and 8th in the 100m I/M. This resulted in him finishing just outside the top six for his age group with an eight position overall. The most successful swimmer was Emily Wright in the girls 15/O age group as she claimed two victories in the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke with a second place in the 100m freestyle. All this culminated in her claiming the runner up spot overall in her age group. Molly Creed also achieved success with two second places in the girls 9 years 50m freestyle and 100m I/M whilst she placed 8th in the 50m breaststroke. Unfortunately she was also denied further glory by receiving a speeding ticket for swimming too fast in a time just outside the permitted cut off for this event. This placed her fourth overall in her age group in front of team mates Katie Bindon (9th) and Harriet Webster (12th). Katie swam a superb 50m backstroke to claim third place with a 9th place in the 50m freestyle and 11th in the 50m breaststroke in times just outside her life time bests. Producing some fantastic swims Harriet did manage to produce personal best times as she claimed fifth in the 50m butterfly, 8th in the 100m I/M and 11th in the 50m freestyle. In a very strong age group 12 year old Aidan Clover gained two personal best times in the 50m freestyle (12th) and 100m I/M (15th) but just missed out on his hat-trick of times with a 13th place in the 50m backstroke. In the most competitive age group 14 year old Tonicha Watson was another swimmer seeing the fruits of her hard work in training pay off as she too recorded new personal best times with sixth place in the 100m breaststroke and backstroke. She just missed out on the top six with a very impressive 100m freestyle to finish eighth whilst her best place came in the 100m I/M with a fourth place giving her 9th overall in her age group. In the same age group and despite struggling with a shoulder injury Lauren Zaitschenko battled through to record some very presentable times in the 50m butterfly (15th), 100m backstroke (17th) and 100m I/M (18th) with two 14th places in the 100m freestyle and backstroke. Amy Evans was too in excellent form producing some life time best times in the girls 14 years as she claimed a hat-trick of ninth place finishes in the 100m freestyle, breaststroke and I/M with tenth in the 50m butterfly and 11th in the 100m backstroke. May 2011 Open Meets

THE month of May was a busy time for Sturton by Stow based brother and sister duo James and Loveday Beresford. The Gainsborough Dolphins swimmers competed at three Open Meets during this period attending events at the Ponds Forge International Pool at Sheffield and the impressive John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds. With Loveday in a last ditch attempt to gain qualifying times for the Midland District Championships she was unlucky just missing out by fractions of a second in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Despite breaking the 70 second barrier for the first time in the 100m she recovered from this disappointment managing to record four personal best times at Leeds in an event where all proceeds went to SportsAid, helping to fund athletes and swimmers from all across the country. This level one meet attracted some very fast swimmers from Wales, Scotland and all over the Yorkshire and Midland counties with Loveday excelling in the 200m freestyle. Against a competitive field she claimed a silver medal in the girls 12 years recording a life time best. Not to be outdone James also recorded four personal best times at this meet, his best coming in the 10 years 200m Individual Medley (I/M) where he reduced his previous mark by an impressive 11 seconds. After experiencing a 50m pool for the first time they returned the following week to Ponds Forge in the Rotherham Metro Level One Long Course meet. Competing in two events at Sheffield, Loveday again swam superbly to reduce both her 200m and 400m freestyle personal best times, finishing 12th in her age group in the former. This was again an impressive effort against swimmers from Plymouth, London, Tyneside, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Entering only one event James did find it tough going over the four lengths in the 200m backstroke as he swam outside his personal best by just over a second. Competing against the same the level of competition Loveday returned to Sheffield a week later to compete in a meet hosted by the City of Sheffield. Unable to reduce her 200m freestyle time for the third consecutive week she placed 16th in her age group as she did in the 100m freestyle, shaving just one tenth off her personal best. These achievements are quite remarkable as both only learnt to swim eighteen months ago and continuous hard work and dedication will endeavour to bring greater reward in the future.
